Ingredients and substitutions
- Russet potatoes – Russets are well known as the go-to for baked potatoes. I haven’t tried any other type of potato, but feel free to experiment, even if I expect different cooking times and textures. I like to use evenly sized medium potatoes so they all cook evenly.
- Olive oil – Olive oil is my favorite for this baked potato recipe, but you can replace it with avocado oil, grape seed oil, canola oil or olive oil cooking spray. Any oil with a high smoke point will work for these potatoes.
- Kosher salt – I love kosher salt for its flavor, but you can sprinkle with sea salt or even table salt, just make sure you season the potatoes well!
Instructions
Clean the potatoes well and dry them well. Prick all the potatoes with a fork. Coat each potato olive oil and sprinkle everything with Kosher salt.

Place in the basket of the air fryer or on the baking sheets and cook for 30-40 minutes or until the potatoes are tender like a fork on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Use the tongs to remove the potatoes from the air fryer and slice them carefully. Season with salt and pepper, add your favorite toppings – like a pat Buttersliced chives, cheddar cheese, and sour cream – and enjoy your meal!

Advice
- Don’t forget to make holes in the potatoes! This is incredibly important as it releases the steam built up inside the potato as it cooks. Not making holes can cause the potatoes to explode, which is unfortunate and messy.
- Try to keep all potatoes the same size so that they cook evenly. If you find yourself with potatoes of different sizes, try each of them and pull the smaller potatoes as soon as they are tender in a fork and let the larger potatoes cook longer.
- You will know the potatoes are fully cooked when you can easily pierce them all the way to the center with a fork.
- If you want to cook more than 4 potatoes, we recommend that you cook them in batches. If you overcrowd the air fryer, the potatoes will not cook in a timely manner and the skin will not become crunchy on the outside.
Variations
The best part about these baked potatoes – aside from the super crunchy potato skins – is that you can season them with anything you want. Here are some of our family’s favorites:
- Beef and chilli in beer
- Bacon
- sliced green onion
- sliced chives
- sour cream
- Top the Tater
- roasted broccoli
- guacamole
- sauce
- diced onions

FAQ
At 400 degrees, potatoes typically take around 30 minutes, but try the potato with a fork to see if it’s tender and add more time if it’s not fully cooked.
Potatoes should be cooked at 400 degrees in the air fryer for best results and shortest cooking times.
While not strictly necessary, there is always a risk of them exploding during cooking, so it is safer to make holes.
Advance, storage and heating
- Advance: These air fryer baked potatoes should be served hot and fresh from the air fryer. However, you can always make them a day or so and reheat them.
- Storage: Store baked potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Warm up: Reheat baked potatoes in the air fryer or 350 degree oven until well heated. You can also hoe them in the microwave in 30-60 second increments until they’re warmed up.
